DA 9 to host Rice Fun Run in Dipolog Boulevard

National Year of Rice NYR fun runThe Department of Agriculture IX is set to conduct a simultaneous fun run on November 24 at the Dipolog Boulevard in celebration of the nationwide observance of the National Year of Rice at 5:00 am. About 500 persons are expected to participate the said event.

The assembly time will be at 4:00 am early morning on the said date at Punta Corro which will also serve as the starting point for the fun run. The activity comprises of two categories, namely: males and females. Winners will receive medals and cash prizes.

The champion of the fun run will take home a medal and cash worth Php 5,000; the first runner-up will receive a medal and cash prize worth Php 3,000 while the second runner-up will garner a medal and cash prize worth Php 2,000.

Everyone is encouraged to join the said activity. Interested participants are required to  register for free at the City Hall lobby starting November 13. Race numbers will be distributed that will serve as the participant’s corresponding race number upon registration.National Year of Rice 2013 logo

A short program will be conducted to culminate the said event. Among the highlights for the program are video presentations showing the importance of rice and the awarding ceremony for the winners of the fun run. DA-IX Director Constancio Alama is expected to attend and keynote the upcoming event.

The said activity aims to raise awareness in responsible rice consumption and promote less rice wastage. It is in line of the national government’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in rice. The country is reportedly importing thousands of metric tons of rice annually with almost 13% percent or an equivalent of Php 6.2 billion wastage due to improper consumption.

2013 was declared as the National Year of Rice (NYR) under Proclamation No. 494 signed by President Benigno Aquino on October 18, 2012 to formalized the said advocacy.
